Assam Police Delivers Historic Crime Crackdown : Rate Plunges to 100.2 as DGP Harmeet Singh Chairs Virtual Review Under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Leadership

Guwahati, May 16 : Assam Police has achieved a dramatic improvement in law and order, with the state’s crime rate per lakh population falling sharply to 100.2 one of the lowest in recent years. Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS, chaired a high-level Virtual Crime Review Meeting today for the months of March and April 2026.
All Officers-in-Charge (OCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Range Officers joined the session online, alongside senior leadership from Police Headquarters.
Key senior officers present and participating in the review included Dr. Binod Kumar, IPS, Inspector General of Police (MPC), Akhilesh Kumar Singh, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) & IGP (Communication), Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Administration), Dr. V. Siva Prasad Ganjala, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Logistics), Vivek Raj Singh, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (TAP), Yeshey Tshewang Gyatso, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (MPC) and Other Additional Inspector Generals and senior PHQ officers.
Under the visionary and decisive guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Police has sustained an aggressive crackdown on crime while significantly strengthening investigative efficiency, supervision, and technology integration across the state.
Key Achievements Highlighted in the Review :
Crime Rate ↓ to 100.2 (from 121.5 in 2025 and 349.5 in 2021) — a reduction of over 71% since 2021.
Case Pendency ↓ to 10,902 (from 11,140 in 2025 and 133,982 in 2021).
Monthly Average Case Registration ↓ to 3,065 (from 3,682.9 in 2025 and 11,103.3 in 2021).
Charge Sheet Rate ↑ to 86.04% (from 81.46% in 2025 and just 39.40% in 2021).
These impressive numbers reflect the impact of focused, technology-driven policing, strict accountability, timely supervision, adoption of new criminal laws (BNS), forensic advancements, and the dedicated efforts of Assam Police personnel at all levels.
The virtual format ensured broad participation from across all districts and ranges, reinforcing a unified, coordinated approach to maintaining the momentum. Senior officers reviewed district-wise performance, shared best practices, and outlined further strategies to tackle emerging challenges.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has consistently driven police modernization, setting clear targets to position Assam Police among the top forces in India. Initiatives such as expanded commando units, forensic infrastructure, CCTNS enhancements, and zero-vacancy recruitment have played a pivotal role in these gains.
Today’s review underscores the state’s unwavering commitment to delivering a safer and more secure Assam. With strong leadership at the helm and continued rigorous monitoring, authorities are confident of sustaining and further improving these positive trends in the months ahead.
