SIVASAGAR, September 25 : The historic Gargaon College (Autonomous) in Sivasagar celebrated National Service Scheme (NSS) Day with enthusiasm and a strong spirit of community service. A series of activities, including a plantation drive, the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ cleanliness campaign, an interactive programme and colourful cultural performances, marked the occasion.

Addressing the main programme, Principal of the college and noted educationist, poet and essayist Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta called upon students to integrate education with community service and thereby make their lives more meaningful. He emphasised that the National Service Scheme plays a significant role in channelising the spirit of service among students in a planned and systematic manner.

Dr Mahanta said students can make their lives more meaningful and lay a stronger foundation for their future by connecting education with service. He stressed that education should not remain confined to textbooks and classrooms, and that developing a sense of social responsibility and commitment to service is an important part of student life.

He further observed that service begins with oneself. When students sincerely embrace the spirit of service and translate it into action, they can make a meaningful contribution towards improving the social environment of both their institution and the wider community.

According to Dr Mahanta, service undertaken with dedication also contributes to the development of students’ co-curricular abilities. Such experiences, he said, help strengthen their personalities and prepare them to establish themselves as responsible and capable individuals in the future.

NSS Day Activities Begin with Plantation Drive

The day’s activities began in the morning with a plantation drive on the college campus. NSS volunteers planted saplings across the campus, conveying a message of environmental conservation and the importance of creating and maintaining a greener environment.

The initiative also sought to strengthen a sense of responsibility among students towards nature and environmental protection.

‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ Cleanliness Drive on College Campus

Following the plantation programme, NSS volunteers carried out a cleanliness drive on the college premises as part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign.

Through their active participation, the volunteers highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment while also promoting a message of individual as well as collective responsibility towards cleanliness.

More Than 100 New and Senior NSS Volunteers Participate

The main programme held later in the day was conducted by NSS Programme Officer Dr Dipankar Burhagohain.

Principal Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Vice-Principal Diganta Konwar, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Coordinator Dr Surajit Saikia, faculty members and more than 100 new and senior NSS volunteers attended the programme.

Their participation reflected the college community’s emphasis on combining academic development with service-oriented and socially responsible activities.

NSS Offers Opportunities for Life-Oriented Learning—Diganta Konwar

Addressing the gathering, Vice-Principal Diganta Konwar highlighted the importance of the National Service Scheme and said students associated with NSS receive opportunities to acquire life-oriented education and practical experience in addition to curriculum-based learning.

He observed that participation in community-service activities plays an important role in developing a sense of responsibility, discipline, cooperation and social awareness among students.

Call to Develop the Spirit of Service as ‘Social Capital’

IQAC Coordinator Dr Surajit Saikia, in his address, emphasised the need to develop the spirit of service as a form of ‘social capital’.

He encouraged students to recognise their responsibilities towards society and make service an integral part of their personality and everyday life. The message underlined the importance of social engagement in shaping responsible and socially conscious individuals.

Colourful Cultural Programme with Songs, Dance, Recitation and Solo Acting

Following the main programme, a colourful cultural event was organised under the coordination of Jharna Gogoi. NSS members and other students of the college participated enthusiastically.

Students presented songs, dance performances, solo acting and recitations, captivating the audience and adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the NSS Day celebrations.
