SIVASAGAR, May 18 : In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter Jananeta Bhimbor Deori, the All India SC/ST Employees Welfare Association (AISCSTEWA), ONGC Assam Asset, celebrated his birth anniversary on May 16, 2026, at the EWC Hall in ONGC Colony, Sivasagar.

The highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Association’s newly named conference hall the “Jananeta Bhimbor Deori Conference Hall” as a lasting memorial to his immense contributions to tribal rights, indigenous identity, and national integration.

Mukhopadhyay highlighted Deori’s sacrifices and unwavering efforts in safeguarding the identity, rights, and interests of indigenous and tribal communities across Assam and the nation. Bhimbor Deori’s life symbolises the fight for justice, cultural preservation, and inclusive nation-building.

A Beacon for Tribal Empowerment

Born on May 16, 1903, in Panidihing, Sivasagar district, Bhimbor Deori (1903–1947) was a prominent Deori tribal leader, lawyer and nationalist. A graduate of Cotton College, Guwahati, and a law practitioner from Calcutta University, he emerged as a powerful advocate for the rights of plain tribes and backward communities.

As General Secretary of the Assam Backward Plains Tribal League (founded in 1933), Deori played a pivotal role in mobilizing indigenous voices. He was instrumental, alongside Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, in resisting British plans to merge Assam with East Pakistan and ensuring the province’s integration into independent India.

His contributions to land rights, education, and the upliftment of tribal communities earned him the affectionate title “Jananeta” (People’s Leader).

Shri Dembi Ram Panging, Chairman of AISCSTEWA, ONGC Assam Asset, spoke emotionally about the Association’s annual tradition of commemorating Deori’s birth anniversary.

He extended heartfelt gratitude to ONGC Assam Asset Management for supporting the naming of the conference hall, calling it a fitting recognition of the great leader’s legacy.
